Imagine this Instead

By now, I’m sure you’ve probably heard of someone this holiday season that has come down with some kind of cold or flu. Perhaps it’s even you. If so, I do wish you a speedy recovery, and I’m sending good vibes your way!

One thing I’ve noticed about myself is that, when someone close to me or someone that I’ve been around catches something, my fears of catching it as well tend to kick in. I go on heightened alert!

I find my mind imagining worst-case scenarios… “I can’t get sick now! It’s the holidays! Maybe I’ll have to stay home and my family will have to travel without me! Oh, I don’t want to be alone on Christmas!”

I’ve observed my mind going to some pretty dramatic places in such circumstances. I have quite the imagination.

When I catch myself having thoughts like this (and that is a good thing to catch), I realize that I am making up my own mind movies. I also realize that I am the producer of my own mind movies. What’s empowering to know is that I can rewrite the script and make the story take any turn I want.

Rather than imagining a dreadful holiday, I can think… what’s the best-case scenario? What does that look like? What does that feel like? Let me dwell on that for a while!

As you can see, this is a great skill to have – this ability to create positive mind movies or positive mental images. Like my coach has told me, you’ve got a powerful imagination. Why not make it work for you instead of against you?

Here’s to imagining the best holiday season you’ve ever had!

Happy holidays!
