A couple nights ago my family and I were playing the game of Life. I got fired…twice! Evidently it was not in the cards for me to be a pilot! As fate would have it, my career in Life was to be a veterinarian. Who knew?
Poor Carley, she was having a heck of a time. She kept rolling low numbers and didn’t get as many kids as the rest of us. (Kids are worth a lot at the end of the game.) She didn’t seem to be enjoying the game too much.
I kept thinking it doesn’t matter if you win or lose. The point is that you enjoy the journey, or in this case the game. Occasionally I would remind her of the lyrics to one of my songs, “The journey is my destination!”
That didn’t help.
Carley finished last…like way last.
However, once we added up all our “stuff” at the end of the game, Carley had won by a landslide.
All those low-numbered rolls meant she ended up with a LOT of action cards, which are very valuable in that game.
It’s kind of ironic that she didn’t enjoy the game because of her perception that she was not doing as well as everyone else.
Man, that happens to me all the time in real life!
It’s helpful in times like that to remember the journey IS the destination, even if you end up getting fired and your life takes a direction you never saw coming.
