Question: What happens when a promising young athlete suffers a career-ending injury, and what does that have to do with you?
I’ve been reading a great book called The I-Factor by Van Moody. He’s talking about the idea that who you are is much more important than what happened to you. He brings up this idea in the context of athletes and their injuries, and it made me think of Lewis Howes.
Lewis Howes is currently the host of a very successful podcast called The School of Greatness. He has also published a book with the same name. Lewis started out as a professional football player. His career was ended, though, when he suffered an unfortunate injury.
What I appreciate about Lewis is that he did not let that injury define who he was. His injury may have ended his career, but it didn’t end his life.
Lewis, and many other athletes like him, have had to make a tough decision: Am I going to let a circumstance that was out of my control determine who I am?
I am inspired by Lewis’ decision to continue pushing forward and making a difference in the lives of many.
Athletes are not the only ones who have had to face that decision. I would be willing to bet there are things that have happened in your life – unfortunate things that were either a direct result of a decision you made, or simply a circumstance. I know I could tell you about several of those in my life.
The question is, are you letting those things define who you are, or have you bounced back?
Maybe you’re still wondering if or how you could ever bounce back. Maybe you think it’s too late or unimportant now.
I know this can be some pretty heavy stuff, and maybe more than you were planning on thinking about right now. I understand. I would encourage you to give it some thought, though, and if you have anything to share, I’d love to hear from you about it.
Here’s to bouncing back!
